Miguel's Baja Grill

51 N. Main St.
Moab, UT
(435) 259-6546

Miguel's building is almost as big an attraction as the food. Located downtown on Moab's surprisingly busy Main Street, Miguel's Baja Grill has a large outdoor dining area as well as an indoor restaurant. Since the restaurant is only open in the evening, the frequent late day and night chill of the Utah desert has prompted the owners to install heaters so that diners can sit outside comfortably. Those who do not live in the desert may marvel at the clear air, lack of bugs, still nights, and view of the stars that so often make outdoor dining such a pleasure. I observed quite a few customers taking advantage of it, although I chose to take refuge in the warm indoor dining room.

It is not always easy to provide high quality fish in the desert, but Miguel's Baja Grill does so. The fish here comes from Chile, and although it is not quite as fresh as would be found in an oceanside market, I thought it was quite good.

The Fish Tacos were lightly breaded, or can be ordered grilled. I have seldom had fish tacos in the Southwest that were this good in quality. If I were eating in a high-end seafood restaurant I might have an issue with Chilean fish that is almost exclusively farm raised, but considering many of the meals I am able to find in the great Southwest, I thought I did pretty well with the fish at Miguel's.

The main problem with dinner here was that no good salsas were available to put on the tacos, nor did I receive much enjoyment from the refried beans and rice served on the side. Everyone has their own concept of good salsa, and this was not a restaurant that served spicy Mexican food such as New Mexico style. Still, I thougt it could have been spicier.

Miguel's is expensive, as all restaurants in Moab seem to have become. The fish tacos and ice tea were good. In fact, most of my food was good--I just would not call it very authentic Mexican food.
