Chinatown Restaurant

3407 Greystone Dr.
Austin, TX
(512) 343-9307

Note: Since my last visit I have been reading that Chinatown now has dim sum and other authentic dishes that likely make it even better than I remember.

My initiation to Chinatown was in the days when I had not experienced some of the more authentic Chinese dishes, and in fact the more authentic restaurants could not be found, at least in Texas. Although I would classify this as "Americanized" Chinese food, I have thought through the years that it is one of the more delicious examples of this food genre.

My best meals here have been the spicy Hunan and Szechuan dishes. The Kung Pao Chicken has always been a standout, and is available as a lunch special (making it probably the best bargain on the menu). When I tried the tofu version it was good as well, as I would expect in a city that has gained a large vegetarian following in the past few years.

The Hot and Sour Soup is one of the best anywhere (and I have tried it all over the country). This alone is worthy of giving the restaurant a five-star rating.

The only hot tea served is oolong, but it is good.

The Greystone location is on the west side of MoPac Freeway, along the Balcones Fault where the land rises up to give a great view of the city. (Hopefully I am remembering my college geology courses correctly). The restaurant is a little bit on the expensive side because of the view, the setting, and the somewhat upscale furnishings, but with food this good I do not feel that it is overpriced.
