China House

12400 N. May Ave.
Oklahoma City, OK
(405) 936-0906

China House is one of a number of small storefront Chinese restaurants that specialize in take-out orders. China House is larger than some places, with six tables for eating in. Even if you eat in the restaurant, though, orders must be picked up at the counter.

I tried China House because of the fact that no MSG is used, and they serve jasmine tea if you eat in. The Bean Curd Szechuan Style also sounded as if it might be good. It was a fairly large portion of well cooked tofu and fresh vegetables, but it left me disappointed as far as being a Szechuan style dish. It barely had enough chile to add some flavor, but it was not hot at all. The sauce was the biggest disappointment, however. I liked the fact that there was enough brown sauce to cover the dish, but it was severely lacking in flavor, especially the Chinese flavors I find in many restaurants. I really thought the only thing "Szechuan" about the dish was the fact that celery, onions, and green peppers were included in the vegetable mix. While the dish was good, it was nothing special.

The steamed rice was the fragrant jasmine type, and very good. The tea was good, and overall the restaurant was good for a take-out place, but I hope that better dishes are served than the one I ordered.

Lunch specials are served every day, and are quite cheap. If you are on a budget this is probably a good place to get to go orders.
