Charm Thai Cuisine

Charm Thai Cuisine may very well be the best Thai restaurant in the Oklahoma City area. There are at least a couple of other worthy competitors, and others I have not tried, but I find it hard to imagine how it could get much better than this restaurant. All the dishes I have tried have been prepared the way I think they should be. The now closed Thai Palace in Edmond gave me the same impression, so I am glad to find Charm Thai as a possible replacement for my Thai cravings.

Charm Thai opened with different owners than it has now, and I think the new owners have made a good restaurant even better.

This is a small restaurant that I have seen crowded but never full (I imagine the tables do fill up, though, on busy nights). I expect occasional waits at "mom and pop" restaurants, though, as the tradeoff for the type of home style food they prepare.

Thai ginger
Ginger stir-fried (pad khing) with tofu

The Ginger Stir Fry (pad khing) is always one of my favorite dishes, and the one here lived up to my expectations. The sauce was flavorful and it had a good balance of flavors. The biggest negative of the dish is the vegetables that are included, although it does have some good mushrooms. I would say go ahead and order it--the tofu or meat that comes with it will make it satisfying.

Pad prik khing

To me an even better dish is the Pad Prik Khing, usually my yardstick for measuring the food at Thai restaurants. In this case it was very good, with the green beans being fresh and crunchy (and there were a lot of them). The curry paste (curry without the coconut milk) was very flavorful, and this dish definitely had everything I expected.

Curry delight
Curry delight

Curry Delight is a dish whose visual appeal is not nearly as pronounced as its flavor, but this is a very good choice for a delicious meal.

Pad preaw wan
Pad preaw wan

Pad Preaw Wan is Thai style sweet and sour, and contains both of these flavors (as opposed to the more common sauces which are just sweet). I think it is better when ordered spicy, but it is a good dish either way.

Green tea ice cream
Green tea ice cream

Green Tea Ice Cream makes a good aftercourse to a spicy meal, or just a better than average dish of ice cream.

My assessment of Charm Thai is that they do everything right, and it is a very good place to try new dishes. Some dishes have smaller than average portion sizes, but prices are not high and the food is great (and I suppose it is possible to order extra rice). There are some very good Thai restaurants in other parts of the city, but if you are on the west side I would definitely recommend trying out Charm Thai.

My Comments in a Nutshell
What I like most:
  • This may be the best Thai restaurant in OKC.
  • They have very good versions of my favorite dishes (pad prik khing and ginger stir fry).
  • Food is great, but portions are sometimes small (this could be remedied by ordering extra rice).
Things to know:
  • The restaurant is small. Although I have never counted the number of tables, I don't think it is over ten.
  • The restaurant changed owners about the beginning of 2013. I liked the restaurant before, but now I think the food is almost flawless (the number of menu choices is about average for Thai restaurants, so I can't count this as either a positive nor a negative).
  • The good thing about their spice level is that it is never hotter or milder than I expect, but the bad thing is that if I ask them to prepare a dish "as the chef recommends" they would rather that I pick my own spice level.
