Arbuckle Mountain Original Fried Pies at N.W. 50th and Portland

For many years the Original Fried Pie Place operated near the intersection of N.W. 50th and Portland, and my understanding was that it served the same fried pies that were well known in Davis, a town near the Arbuckle Mountains in southern Oklahoma. In August 2011 the Original Fried Pie Place closed in Oklahoma City, leaving stores still operating near Dallas and Amarillo, Texas. The Oklahoma City location then became Arbuckle Mountain Original Fried Pies, which is the company in Davis that sells fried pies along Interstate 35.

So far I have noticed little difference in the pies since the name changed, and Arbuckle Mountain Original Fried Pies seems to be using the same recipes as the former Original Fried Pie Place. To me they both taste like the "Original."

The description I gave to the Original Fried Pie Place seems to apply to Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies as well:

Merely describing the fruit pie at Original Fried Pie Place may be all the persuasion anyone needs to try it. With dough that is made daily from a family recipe, this is not the normal bakery item found at a typical food store. The crust and fruit filling inside taste like the treats many of us experienced at home while growing up, but which few of us now have time to prepare. The Original Fried Pie Place can do it for us, though, and now has locations near Dallas and Amarillo to supplement the long-time Oklahoma City store.
The Original Fried Pie Place is also a restaurant, serving "Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Pies" filled with different meats and vegetables. These have the same crust as the fruit pies, but are filled with such items as sausage and egg, chicken & vegetable, or spinach, mushroom & three cheeses (for the only vegetarian version I could find). All of the fruit and meat pies sell for a similar price, so it is not expensive to sample different ones.

Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies also serves the breakfast and lunch meat pies, as well as a spinach, mushroom, and potato pie.

Apple pie

The Apple Pie was excellent, and I think has one of the best fillings of the fruit pies that are served. It had large chunks of fruit, and although it was sweet, it was not loaded down with "a whole bunch of sugar, artificial flavoring, and gloop (filler)," as Arbuckle Mountain's web site describes some of the competitors' versions (and I agree that Arbuckle Mountain Original Fried Pie is much better than most of the competition).

Apricot pie

I also liked the apricot pie, but the peach was probably better (it is a close call, though). The cherry pie was also one of my favorites because I thought the fruit tasted fresh.

They also have cream pies (coconut, chocolate, lemon, etc.).

These are some of the freshest and most flavorful fried pies that are available, and I think they are an important part of the local food scene.
